| | Is it dangerous to "upgrade" to Vista? Dear friends: Is it dangerous to "upgrade" XP Pro SP2 to Vista Business? In another newsgroup, I asked about "upgrading" XP to Vista, and I received more than 12+ horrified replies telling me to never do that, nothing will work OK after an upgrade, etc. They tell me that the only possibility to succeed was to do a clean Vista install, and to reinstall, after that, all my applications and databases. If this perception is true, I think that I will *never* go to Vista, until I replace all my computers in two years or more. I don't think that it is worthwhile the effort and associated risk of reinstalling all my work tools, databases, that they work today OK under XP. Which is your opinion about? All my computers are less than one year old. Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de Chile (South America) Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it! |

| | Re: Is it dangerous to "upgrade" to Vista? there is always a slight risk that some programs might "break", although I have upgraded to Ultimate I have not encountered any problems EXCEPT WITH MY GRAPHICS DRIVER now fixed. If in doubt take a image of the hard drive, so you can revert if needed, and give it a try... DominicM "Juan I. | | Re: Is it dangerous to "upgrade" to Vista? I have done an upgrade from XP Home to Vista Business and it was very problematic, driver issues and application compatibility. If you choose to do a clean install, it cannot be done with upgrade version of Vista, you have to purchase the full packaged product. A clean install is always the best route I say since it guarantees way less tweaking than the upgrade. And it does not take as long either. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry "Juan I. | win xp pro | I would recommend you to stay with XP. If you are a superior game user and you really need eye rotating themes then you can find it in vista. vista in my view simply an front end to XP. it consumes too much amount of hardware. also if you really need it then use the vista transformation pack6, your PC will transform to vista. then download windows bit defender and IE7. now your PC will have a vista look. never ever go for upgrade, its wise to have a safe install. |

| | Re: Is it dangerous to "upgrade" to Vista? I upgraded XP Pro to Vista Business....not a single problem and it works great to this day. Stable, and fast, although with Vista 2 megs of RAM is almost a necessity. I protest... Aero is so pretty. Doesn't everybody want a "pretty" desktop and newer, bigger icons? |
