Vista - Problems Installing programs needing Administrator Privileges

Hi,

I have recently purchased a new computer which runs Vista, I have tried to
install my printer which was from my previous computer running windows XP,
however halfway through installation process, it fails and tells me to log
off and then log in as a user with full administritive priviliges, please can
you advise as I am the only user on this computer I thought I had done that
when installing Windows Vista.

Hi,

I had already tried that as I had read the forum first hoping to find an
answer beforehand. It wont let me right click on the icon as I haven't
installed the program yet, although right clicking on the C: drive in my
computer, under properties, then the security tab, it says I am an
administrator, but I haven't got special permissions, there is also a
"authenticated user" which has got special permissions, I am guessing that is
what I need. Any ideas?

I have tried a couple of programs that have said I need administrator
priviliges, and although I am a administrator, it wont let me install it and
just cancels.

What you are observing is the User Account Control (AKA - UAC). This new
security feature protects against some threats by causing even administrator
level accounts to "normally" run without full administrator privileges.

The installation program is also a program. I'll assume for a moment that
you are inserting a CD and it is auto playing which runs the installation
program. In all likelihood, there is a "Setup.exe" in the root of the CD.
This is what you should right click.

If this isn't the case, post back with what the application is and such and
maybe we can help more.

You were right, when I right clicked on the setup.exe file while exploring
the disc, I clicked "run as administrator" but it only got as far as it
always had done, I have copied the error message below:

This software cannot be installed using the 'Run as...' command. The
installation cannot continue until this is resolved.

Required Action: Click Cancel to exit this software installation. Log off
and then log on as a user with administrator privileges. (Contact your system
administrator for more information.) If there is no system administrator,
have the primary user of this computer install the software. Restart the
installation by removing and re-inserting this installation CD.

Any ideas?

You can try turning UAC off temporarily.

Go to Start->Control Panel->User Accounts. Select
"Turn User Account Control on or off"
Uncheck to turn off.

Try your install again.

Be sure to turn it back on when you get done to maintain the protection.

Hi again,

Still not working, It gets to exactly the same point as it does normally,
and I got the same message as below. I can't understand what the problem is,
I really need my printer. Do you think it would just be better to go out and
buy a printer?
