How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

I have an AMD Turion 64, MK-36 on a computer that came with XP Media Center
Edition. The "64" after the AMD name tells me that the processor must be
64bit but I'm not sure if the OS is 64bit as well. I read that you need to
upgrade to the same "bit" version so I don't want to install the wrong one.

Thanks

Right-click My Computer and select properties.
Read the System Type.

If you haven't installed Vista or XP, I'd recommend a 32-bit edition even if
you're computer can handle 64-bit. There just isn't much support or software
for the 64-bit versions.

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks Mark,
The problem is that I checked that originally but all I see is:
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Then, under Manufacturer and supported by it says:
AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile
Technology MK-36
1.60 GHz, 960 MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

I see the 64 in ref to the processor but I don't see any designation for the
OS.

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Two major versions of Windows XP 64-bit Edition were released:

Windows XP 64-bit Edition for Itanium systems, Version 2002 — Based on
Windows XP codebase, which was released in 2001
Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Version 2003 — Based on Windows Server 2003
codebase, which added support for the Itanium 2 processor, was released on
March 28, 2003.

Windows XP 64-bit didn't fall into one of Microsoft's then current Windows
XP product lines ('Home', 'Professional', 'Media Center' or 'Tablet') but
was a separate edition made solely for the Itanium processor and its 64-bit
instructions.

So, you have a 32-bit edition.

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Well that sounds pretty deffinitive. Thanks for the help Mark!

Actualy, I'm still sort of on the fence about the upgrade. I used 98SE from
00'-06' when I bought a laptop with XP. I stayed with 98SE as long as I
could because of all the problems I heard about with ME & 2000. Now the
decision as to upgrade from XP to Vista...

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Yes, you would see it stated in the properties if you had it.

My system says - Windows XP X64 Professional Edition Version 2003

If it dosn't explicitly state 64 bit, then it is a 32 bit edition.

cheers
Andy

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

If you like XP, stick with it for a few more months until service pack 1 is
released and the platform is more compatible.

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks to both of you for the answers. I have one last question if you have
the time. Is there a difference (or advantage) between waiting for SP1 to
be released and installing a current edition then downloading the SP1 update
after it gets released?

Thanks

Re: How do U know if a version of XP is 32 or 64 bit?

Just the frustration of getting it to work well with what you currently have
for hardware.
If you're an avid game player, you will also find a lot of programs that
fail at various stages.

Ok, Thanks. I'll wait for SP1.
