SP1 Question

I've read that Microsoft if going to release Vista Service Pack 1 soon, do
you think they will include the classic dialogue box logon as a update?
because i really miss it as i am running Vista Home Premium and am not too
used to the Welcome Screen

I don't know where you've read that, but I've not seen a beta.
I'd be suprised if Microsoft released a service back before Q4 2008.

I would not expect sp1 until 4th quarter - at least. I'll be somewhat
surprised if it makes it this year.

Re: SP1 Question

It has long been scheduled for release in the last quarter of 2007 along
with Longhorn Server, which will release at service pack level 1. The two
are tied together since they share the same codebase. New features are not
included in service packs. The classic logon box is not going to be
implemented in Vista (by design) due to other changes made to logon. This
was often discussed during beta testing and the Vista team was firm that
classic logon is dead.

Who put the 8 near the 7 on my keyboard?

I'd be suprised if Microsoft released a service back before Q4 2007.

That's true, but you can come close(ish) by setting a couple of
policies.
Unfortunately, neither of these are available under the Home versions of
Vista. It may be that they are available through the registry, but if
they are I don't know right off where.

In Control Panel - Click System and Maintenance - Click Administrative
Tools - Double-Click Local Security Policy - In the left pane, click the
triangle next to Local Policy - In the left pane, click Security
Options - In the right pane, double-click "Interactive logon: Do not
display last user name" - Click Enabled and then OK - In the right pane,
double-click "Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL" - Click
Disabled and then OK

I'm not sure if you also have to disable Fast User Switching, but if so
that is done by Clicking Start, type gpedit.msc and press Enter, in the
left pane under Computer Configuration click the triangle next to
Administrative Templates, in the left pane click the triangle next to
System, in the left pane click on Logon, in the right pane double click
Hide entry points for Fast User Switching, click Enabled and then OK.

Once this is done, you have as close to the "classic" logon as you can
in Vista (at least, as far as I know.)

Regards,

Dave

Intel's CEO let it slip that SP1 will be released in October or November
of this year. Evidently he has some insider information.

Re: SP1 Question

This has been public information since before Vista went Gold. It is tied
to the release of Longhorn Server.
