| Guest | Temperature Monitors Is there a way to monitor your hard drive temperatures in Vista without third party software? Has anyone found third party software that will work with Vista to monitor hard drive temperatures? Thanks Irv |

No. It's simply not possible. The ability to monitor hardware components depends on the hardware manufacturers writing drivers and making software available that both expose this data to the system. And it's very specific to what hardware you're using so there isn't really anything in Vista itself that I'm aware of (and if there was, it would simply be using the data exposed by drivers, for reasons I've already covered). > Has anyone found third party software that will work with Vista to monitor > hard drive temperatures? Sure. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php Again, it assumes the data is made available by the drivers your hardware manufacturer provide. |

| Guest | Re: Temperature Monitors Actually you can talk to the hardware directly (if you know how). The hardware BIOS has to support the appropriate command set to allow you to interrogate the temperature. The trouble is, they need admin rights to do that, and Vista does not allow such rights to be conferred to items in the startup axis. So you have... - works - runs automatically ....pick one. Reading processor and motherboard temperatures is another matter; there's no standard interface, so you have to address the various chipsets directly, and that appears to be difficult. I see many tools that claim to offer that functionality, but fail to. >------------ ----- ---- --- -- - - - - Our senses are our UI to reality >------------ ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |

Ahh... that's the way it would have to be done, but it's a pop-up dialog; what I'd really like is HD temperatures shown and updated in the System Tray. There's a free tool that does this in XP... http://private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/ ....but in Vista it doesn't get the right to access SMART if it is autorun. I doubt if it has a driver or service component, which is the approved way of working around this in Vista. >---------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - Proverbs Unscrolled #37 "Build it and they will come and break it" >---------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |
