| | Vista Ultimate too slow My system: Gigabyte MB 533 FSB, 2.53 GHz Intel P4, 1GB RDRAM PC 1066, Creative sound, ATI Video card. My problem is that Vista is too slow to respond for almost any thing I try to do. I have used windows defender to shut down everything I can and still no speed. The slowest thing in my computer according to the performance information applet is the calculations per seconds @ 3.7, next is RAM @4.4 and the other 2 are video at greater than 5. Is the the CPU the culprit? The cheapest way to replace it is to go to a 3.06/533, the fastest CPU I can use with my board and RAM, beyond that I can't afford. Will 3.06 GHz be much faster than the 2.53 GHz CPU. Thanks for any opinions. |

I would expect performance on that kind of system to be less than 'ideal' sure, but perfectly usable. I'm using a celeron 2.8ghz with 1gb at work and it does office work just fine, for example. I'd expect a system with those specs to struggle with games these days regardless of what OS it uses, and while i'd expect it to handle graphics work OK on XP, you'd still be skating up to the edge a little for intense work, and the move to Vista (while you can trim it in places, you also have to accept that it wants more resources than XP did) will push that sort of work a little out of range in my estimation. Commenting on your hardware: The frequency of your 'front-side bus' is low compared to the varsity these days. I suspect this is part of the issue and hence simply dropping in a slighly faster procesor might not help. You won't like this, but I would strongly suggest that the processor family and memory you have at the moment are always going to hold you back and are a "dead end". Pouring more money into them will be throwing good money after bad. I would look at a new, modern, motherboard, processor and memory setup. If you want to stay with intel, I'd suggest a 6400 or 6600 core2duo processor, backed with 2gb or so of DDR2 ram on whatever motherboard you like would do the job. More money than you might want to spend, obviously, but I really would question spending more on the current hardware you have, sorry. -- Robert Moir http://www.rhymeswithgeek.com |

To do so, please right click on your shortcut to Internet Explorer and click on "Run as administrator". Important: Once you are done running the full tests, please shut down this instance of Internet Explorer that is running as Administrator.
