How do I change filetype icons?

How can I change the Filetype icons in Vista? A few of my programs didn't set
the icon when they associated themselves with the file, so they show as the
default blank document. I want to be able to change these.

And then what?
I see how to change programs, but not how to change icons.

Re: How do I change filetype icons?

Exactly. Default programs lets you change programs, but doesn't let you
change the icon.

Re: How do I change filetype icons?

By changing the program I believe it will change the icon to associate with
the executable you choose. If it doesn't the only other way I know of is to
edit the registry.

in HKCR locate the associated extension (for example looking at .CAB you'll
see it references WinZip if WinZip is installed). This points you to
HKCR/WinZip (in my example). Within that entry you'll see an entry for
"DefaultIcon" with a string entry of (Default) which points to the
executable or DLL and the icon image within that executable and dll (for
example c:\progra~1\winzip\winzip32.exe,2)

Re: How do I change filetype icons?

So, no more replies means there is simply no way of doing it on Vista? You
see, I love everything about Vista and the only issues I am experiencing are
due to third party drivers (that is, nothing to do with Microsoft and Vista).
But the filetype association is simply awful.

I could explore the registry manually and change the icons there, I know how
to do it. But sometimes the icon is inside a dll or exe file and there is no
way of knowing the resource number (that goes after the comma) for the icon I
want.

That's so bad. How come something so simple is gone? You can search the
internet and you will realise this was not a useless feature on XP, that
nobody used.

Hi all,

Go here and download the 15-day free trial of Vista Manager. It will let you change alot of Icons. Plus, it has quite a few other goodies. Just be sure to get it all done within the 15-days. Be sure to pick the right version (32/64 bit) to download.

Re: How do I change filetype icons?

So, basically, Micro$oft decided to take a free feature that was popular and
turn it into a $40 windfall? Typical, isn't it!
