    Special Characters - how?

    Hello!
I switched from a MacBook to a PC. On the Mac, I was able to type "special"
characters (i.e. accented characters, the section symbol, etc) using a
combination of the Apple key and a letter. How do I type special characters
with Windows Vista? How do I type the section symbole (obviously, I can't
type it here to show as an example)?

    thanks,

    mike

    Hi Mike,

Click start, type CHARMAP and hit <enter> to open the character map. Click
on a character, and you can either copy/paste it or use the keystroke
indicated on the lower right (usually alt+number combination). EG: alt+0169
is a copyright symbol or .

As Rick says but note that you must use the Numeric Keypad to enter the
numbers -- a nuisance if you have a laptop without one.

Luckily with a laptop you can buy a USB connected KEypad ......

Of course you'll need the use of a numeric keypad.

    Hi Hugh,

On laptops you can use fn+ the number keys on the main keyboard
    (789/uio/jkl/m).

In theory but in practice it does not always work for the codes, quite
apart from having to manipulate 3 keys at the same time.
