Vista - what is this virtual inside vista?

i have read there's a virutal thing in vista if you have a virtual
processor. a processor capable of the virtual thing. what exactly is this
virtual thingy? i also have read a long time ago that vista would include
the ability to run virtual oses like using vmware and vpc. but it doesn't.

VMWare and VPC do run on Vista. They're applications, not OS's. They let one
create virtual machines in which one can install an OS.

I don't know much about hardware virtualization... I'm sure there are scads
of articles about it on the web.

I know about vpc and vmware, but that's not what I'm referring to. There was
a lot online from MS even that was saying something about virtualisation and
running Oses from within Vista, not vpc or vmware.

When I saw Virtualisation at a Technet evening Microsoft had a server with
various versions of Office installed on it (I forget what the application
for the virtualisation was called but it was a 3rd party company and this is
almost a year ago now). It allows clients with older machines to access the
latest software without the need to upgrade them and you don't have to worry
about conflicts because nothing gets installed on the PCs.

The client PC we saw able to run Office with no problems and it was running
multiple versions of Word, Excel and Outlook at the same time with no
conflicts.
