Vista - Cannot run windows update on sony vaio laptop running vista business

Hello,

When tryinng to connect to windows update i get an error 80072EFD. i have
tried adding microsoft.com to the allowed site lists. but nothing.

office update also doesn't work. ms word 2003 keeps crashing then telling me
to update office.

comes back with many hits for the error code
when associated with windows update.

"Delete the contents of the DataStore folder and the Download folder,
found in the Win32 folder. Re-try the upgrade installation."
