Vista - External Monitor only shows black and white

I'm working on an issue for my boss. He uses a Gateway M285 laptop and
connects an external monitor to it. His laptop display show all the proper
colors but his external monitor shows only black and white. It had been
working and then all of a sudden it was black and white only. I plugged his
laptop into another monitor and it did the same thing. I thought it might be
a hardware issue so I put his hard drive into another laptop and it still
does it so it has to be something software related. He has an ATI Mobility
Radeon X1400 graphics card and uses the ATI Catalyst Control Center. Does
anyone have any ideas of what setting would do this?

A faulty monitor?

I've tried 2 different monitors, 1 LCD and 1 CRT that both work on other
laptops and also my boss's laptop with a different hard drive and they work.
I'm still stuck on what to look for as far as settings go...
