| Guest | Vista Windows Update problems Hey. I have a legit OEM copy of Windows Vista Ultimate, and it hasn't given me any problems except for my inability to get Windows Updates. I turned off automatic updates right after I installed (since I don't like my computer doing stuff without telling me) and it worked fine for a few weeks. Since the end of March, though, I haven't been able to download updates at all. I click "Check for Updates Now" and the green progress bar goes for a few seconds and then a new window opens saying that it has to close Windows Update. I looked through the forums for any advice, and I found some, and, after using the advice I found, it does the same thing but now it also gives me (occasionally) error code 80080005 and doesn't download any updates. Is there a way I can solve this problem without reinstalling Windows? Please help! Thank you. This is what I did on my XP machines for a long time because windows update wouldn't function even manually unless auto update was enabled. |

| Guest | Re: Vista Windows Update problems Hi, Not sure about Vista, and as JoeT mentioned, you could try Automatic Update and then switch back to manual update. I have a spared XP notebook which is quite old and rarely in use, and the same problem happened to in March when I turned it on after a few months of no use. What I did is to turn on Automatic Update, and interesting enough, it could download and install updates. After a few times, I switched back to Manual Update and it worked ok. According to my research, there are many possible reasons for that particular error codes, and sometimes, it even relates to an older machine which should not be your case. But I am almost certain that it is not related to WGA failure, so don't worry about that part. In any case, try Automatic Update and see if it works. Hope this helps. | Guest | Re: Vista Windows Update problems I thought that might have been the case, but I tried going back to Automatic several times, but every time I do that an error box flashes saying that Windows Update had to shut down and then, if I'm lucky, it gives me the 80080005. Sometimes the Update screen will say that I'm up to date after this, sometimes it will acknowledge that an error occurred. But in all cases, it never actually brings back any updates or a list of available updates. Thank you for the suggestions, though. -- lemonsawdust ------------------------------------------------------------------------ lemonsawdust's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=25246 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=739506 http://forums.techarena.in |
