Newsgroup posts are not the same in Windows Mail and OE6

Just an interesting observation,

On my desk, I have two systems running at the same time, an XP Pro notebook
using OE6 and a LCD screen connected to a Vista desktop using Windows Mail,
but when I read posts in the same newsgroup (e.g. this one), they are not
exactly the same. A few are showing up in Windows Mail but not in OE, but
if I search that particular post in OE, it is there just not showing up.

I did refresh a few times to see if there are any difference but it's the
same, and both are using the same sorting method - by date.

Anyway, just an observation and don't know if anyone else also noticed.

Are you sure you don't have any kill files or filters set on one and
not the other?

No, I won't kill file anyone even if he/she call my name

A couple of ideas to check. Apologies for not being particularly
specific - I don't actually use Windows Mail or OE6 myself.

Some newsreaders have an option to download a maximum number of headers
at once (eg. mine will prompt me to download more than 500). It could be
that if there are more than that number of new messages, OE only
downloads the newest however many, and doesn't prompt to download the
rest. Maybe look for such an option in the newsgroup account settings in
OE? Something like "download at most (n) new messages"?

If all new messages come up in both, but it's just some old ones that
don't show in OE, it could be that those are messages from before you
first set up the newsgroup on OE.

I think Mark is on to the answer. Read this article I wrote at
http://www.mindspring.com/~anorton1/Post_Mystery.html
and see if it explains what you are seeing. There are instructions there as
well for a workaround to the problem.

Re: Newsgroup posts are not the same in Windows Mail and OE6

Hi,

Examples at this moment:

I see "RE: "Run as Administrator"...make default??" (sarahl, 05/02/2007
5:54PM) in Windows Mail but not in OE6.

By the way, it seems to me that those posts showing only in Windows Mail are
replies to the original post.

I have another one titled: Re: Cannot email photos, also is a reply and it
shows in Windows Mail on the top of the list but not in OE6.

Strange but well...

Re: Newsgroup posts are not the same in Windows Mail and OE6

Hi,

Thanks.

Both are set to get "300" headers at a time - which I think is default value
and more than I want to read

Actually, those are posts within 1-2 weeks, but as just posted, it seems
those only shown in Windows Mail are replies to the original post and could
it be under the original post in OE6, I have no idea.

Anyway, thanks for the kind suggestion and it's just an interesting
observation for which I won't bother to find out the cause.

Thanks

Re: Newsgroup posts are not the same in Windows Mail and OE6

Hi,

Thanks and it's very informative article.

But I don't want to download all headers, and I can live with missing some
posts. I don't read every one, after all.

But thanks for the information and I could use it if I wan to in the future.

Re: Newsgroup posts are not the same in Windows Mail and OE6

have not used OE in a while, but seem to remember an option that effected the way replies were displayed.
whether in line under the original or just organized by he way you have selected.
might check over the options in xp carefully.
