| | Disk Activity BEFORE Logging on I generally switch my PC on when I get up, then go off and make a cup of cofee and come back to complete the log-on when I'm ready. I have Vista Home Premium - booted via BootitNG. Very often, when I come back to the machine, the disk is undergoing a great deal of activity - even though I have not yet entered my password to Log on. I do have indexing switched on - but as I haven't actually entered Vista yet, surely that can't be active?? Obviously as I am not in the O/S yet, I can't do any diagnostic work such as checking task manager etc. What on earth can it be doing?? |

It may be defragging your drive in the background, collecting performance information (eg for the reports you see in 'Reliability and Performance Monitor'), or Windows Defender running a spyware scan.... When Windows notices that your computer is idle, then it takes the opportunity to run a few background tasks for general housekeeping etc. -- Jon |
