Those are not the only alternatives.
Check this site against your current and future needs.

Ultimate
To OP, Upgrade Win XP pro and give it a flashy theme and a new wallpaper,
and leave the ultimate vista trash behind until Microsoft re-learns how to
make quality OS's...
Your computer will work faster and more reliable. How fast? XP is 20 to 70%
faster than Vista (depending to what app we are testing)
HA!
To Frank.... hello there buddy... why are you trying to condemn this guy to
endless struggles with a horrid OS?
Wait .. I know the answer.... vista works fine on your computer! Yet you
cannot compare it directly with the
speed XP would have....
If you want to really know whats going on, you MUST dual boot the 2 OS and
compare speeds with a chronometer!
This is what i have done.. and know very well that vista is sluggish and
crawls compared to XP. And yes I do have Vista.
But I don't like it! lol... its too slow for my taste.
Please use the scientific method of experimentation instead of claiming
things because you think they must be correct.
and please dont say that vista is fast on new generation hardware... because
if you format and install XP on that same hardware
it will be faster than it was with Vista.

Actually, I don't think you can upgrade (literally) from XP Pro to Home
Premium (ie buy the upgrade version. or run the upgrade utility from the
full version). You'd have to do a clean install.

The HP website, which used to recommend XP Pro, now recommends
Vista Home Premium. That's what helped me make my decision.
I trust HP,...Frank

Do not upgrade XP to Vista.
Wait with Your XP , it is good and stable OS.
Vista is OS full of problems, every day You will have new problem.
Wait for Vista Service Pack I or II.

It's always been the same, hardware follows software. ie the software is
done first, then the hardware has to catch up to run the software
"correctly, faster, better, etc".
Anybody in gaming knows this, the same goes for MS OS's.

You can use an upgrade version to go from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium, but
it requires a clean install. If you want to perform a true upgrade, you will
need to buy either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.
You need to be aware that some features in XP Pro will not be available in
Vista Home Premium. See the following website for more details.

If you really want to make an informed decision about which version to buy,
the Vista Product Guide. It lists everything single item that is or is not
included in every version.
