CD / Flash Drives inaccessible

For some reason, my CD/DVD and any flash/external hard drives I connect are
inaccessible. They appear in Windows Explorer with a red circle with a line
through it over the drive icon.

They were working until very recently but I can't work out what caused the
problem or how to fix it.

If anyone has any ideas, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Nick
