| Guest | please help me with my new vista, it wont play video files from XP hello all, I am new to this so please be gentle, I have bought a new laptop with vista installed & i am so disapointed with it. The main problem I am having at the moment is when i send video files to cd writer & burn them on my XP sp2 desktop the discs do not play on my vista laptop : the audio is there but no vision just the grapics..I have also noticed that when I copy a video file in this way using vista it will not play in my dvd player but if i copy same file in XP it will play in my dvd player. Why is this & can i get round it..Also with vista, when listening to audio files the time it takes wmp to start is unreal & when you skip a track or 2 it can take up to 1 minute before playing. I wish i had kept my old XP laptop as this new laptop is more or less useless to me.Can anybody help??? |

It sounds like you are missing some video codes on your Vista laptop. There are several video formats, which are you using? (Check the file type) Next... download and install http://www.videolan.org/ and check k again to see if you can watch the vids. If that works it is likely that you were missing some codecs. |

| Guest | Re: please help me with my new vista, it wont play video files fro Thanks Julian, I have already downloaded videolan & realplayer to see if that works but it still does not..the most important video file I need to play is in AVI ( Im guessing thats what you mean when you ask what file type? ) I also have alot of important video files in VLC & even though I have installed videolan it still only plays the audio & no visual.. any ideas?? "Windows Media Player will play .avi files. If it won't it's probably because the files were created with a codec that WMP doesn't understand. Download Windows Media Encoder and re-encode the files and I'll bet they play then. " http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.mspx http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-623...sageID=2080328 |

| Guest | Re: please help me with my new vista, it wont play video files from XP Try getting a codec package from 'Free-Codecs.com :: Download Vista Codec Package 4.4.2 : With Vista Codec Package installed, you won't need to install any other codec or filter.' | Guest | Re: please help me with my new vista, it wont play video files fro Download Divx 6.2 I have found this version to be the best. When installing, only install the codec's themselves. Deselect the other items. I have found the later versions somewhat invasive, even when installing just the codec's.
