Vista - Remote Assistance running extremely slowly

Any help much appreciated for this question.

I am attempting to offer Remote Assistance to another machine. I
establish the connection using Windows Live Messenger. Both machines
are running Vista Home Premium, final retail version.

I can always establish the connection and always initially see the
remote machine's screen. But on most occasions, my copy of the remote
machine's screen takes an age to update - over two minutes - between
any actions. Clearly this means that the connection is in practice
unusable.

However, I have established a fully working, full-speed connection
twice (out of around 20 attempts), so I know that there are no firewall
problems etc. Both machines are running only standard Windows Firewall.
No other programs or devices are using the internet connection at
either end.

This is extremely frustrating and essentially seems to be random. Does
anybody have any experience of this and/or any ideas how I might resolve
the problem?

Use Tight VNC doing a machine to machine connection over the Internet. It
should be faster.
