Internet Shortcut Icons

Why can't I change the icons on Internet shortcuts. I go through the
entire Change Icon routine but the icons do not appear on the desktop.
Is this another one of Vista's bugs?

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

Hi Paul--

Yes, I think it is. I've noticed that throughout every build. Notice
though, that as long as you go through the same process on a folder, you can
change the icon. I have not been able to do this at all on a shortcut on
Vista, as of course you can with XP and OS's before XP.

I'll try to see if I can get some info from MSFT. I've been wondering why
this happens myself.

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

I've have managed to chance the icon.
Check the icon file. If it is url.dll it won't work.
Change it to shell.dll , lower case, SHELL.DLL won't work either.
You can then pick most of the icons.
I can't get this to work on DOS shortcuts.
I also can't get Vista to recognise the icon suplied by the internet
site although it does display in the Change Icon dialogue !!!!
Is there a fix for this total mess.....

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

Hi Don,
When I create a shortcut on my desktop by right clicking at the web
site, I would subsequently like to change the icon from the default. I
have just discovered the initially Vista seems to set the icon file to
...... url.dll which has onlt 4 icons. After changing the icon vista
changes this file to SHELL.DLL. At this point the icon can be changed.
However, I cannot change a DOS shortcut icons as the [Apply] is
lowlighted. And why doesn't Vista use the icons as supplied by the
target site ?
Many thanks
John

Hi Paul,

You might try one using Method Two or Three in this tutorial instead. It should make it easier for you to change the icons to what you want.

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

I notice that changing the desktop View to Classic Icons allows the
desired icon to display whereas the Medium and Large icon options show
the big 'e'. There appear to be a pile of solutions in the Windows
Vistax64.com forum (title "How to Create a Desktop Internet Shortcut
without getting the Default IE Icon in Vista"). Sound like all good
solutions but my response, 'you've got to be kidding me'. Why doesn't
it just flat work when you go thru the Change Icon dialog? Maybe the
shell32.dll doesn't scale to my desktop size, whatever this means?

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

Hi krgoodwin,

My guess is that favicons use small size icons that are not supported by anything larger than the "Classic Icons". This is why it defaults to the IE7 "e" icon when another size is used.

I guess until the standard for favicons is changed to use larger icons, we will be stuck having to use work arounds like at:

Re: Internet Shortcut Icons

I didn't like them but a good series of solutions to the shortcut icon
problem can be found at:

(Internet Shortcut)

The forum's administrator understands the problem.

Your welcome John. You can also increase the DPI size from 96 to help compensate for the "Classic Icons" size until then you wanted to.
