windows media player hang and the monitor goes off on Vista OS

I am using new laptop come with windows vista basic OS. Usually when I play
some WMV files, it plays for sometimes then hang and monitor off, but the
computer still working. I tried to press ctrl alt delete to stop the task of
playing it or esc, or any other buttons. But it does not work. Therefore,
sometimes I keep waiting for the processors or to the wondows to figure out
what is the problem or waiting for the wondows media to stop playing the
files. Unfortunatly, nothing happen still hanging. And I keep waiting for
several hours, but nothing happen. After that I hold the power button to shut
down then start again.
May I know why this happen? whats wrong with my windows media player? and
how can I solve this problem? it really drive me crazy especially when I got
some works that i have to finish it, but when this problem occur, my works
gone and I have to do it from begining.
Kindly, please help me to figure out what is the problem and how to solve it?

looking forward to hearing from you soon.

your faithfully,
AbdulRahman

Re: windows media player hang and the monitor goes off on Vista OS

#1 would be to save your work every so often so a lockup will only lose a
few minutes work.
Many programs have a setting that allows you to do this automatically.
In programs that don't have such an option, I save the work as
projectfilename1, projectfilename2, etc until finished.
If you save every 15 mins, that is the most work you lose if something
causes a lockup, power outage, etc.
Make sure you have the latest updates to WMP and the proper codecs.
I have seen .wmv files that were corrupted and would lock the player up
every time.
