Vista - can not get rid of norton

I uninstalled Norton completely with Norton Removal Tool.
I don't find any instance of Norton or Symantec in my Registry anymore.
Though: when looking in Security Center under Firewall it says:
"windows firewall and norton internet security both report that they are
turned on"
same thing with Windows Defender.

There's a program on the web I can buy that promises me to get rid of Norton
completely
But paying 30$ to get rid of a program is one bridge to far for me!

Anyone with the same problem ?

( I'm using NOD32 and Windows Firewall now)

I wish I had some good advice for you here. I know Norton can be a bit of a pain. I've heard it from so many sources and consumers about removing Norton. I'd normally recommend the removal tool here:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

However, since you've tried the latest version of the offical removal tool and went through your register. ... Good luck comrade. Your best bet may be google.

I don't know what has happened with Norton ( anything ) over the last 5
years or so. It used to be such a great program but now it has become such a
pain.
By using Norton's removal tool you are trying to get a product from Norton
to remove Norton stuff ( that in istelf is a laugh ) but what I suggest you
do is now that the registry is cleared of it go into Windows explorer and
look for any Norton directory and physically remove the files. This might be
better done in safe mode ( not sure if Vista has one though ) If it doesn't
make sure that you check your taskbar and exit ot quit any norton stuff
before trying to remove files. Other than that do a search on the web for
something that will remove all of a program.

Look for Norton Protection Center and Norton Firewall Monitor in the Local Services(start/run/services.msc)
If present find the path to the executable files, then stop the service(s), then disable.
Restart, then attempt to delete the file(s).
- you have to do this in admin account
It should then unbind from the Windows Security Center

Note: Ensure you have a complete backup/image of the o/s prior to proceeding and a complete understanding on how to restore.

Ok I found the solution:

Reinstalled the trial version and destinstalled again with Windows Add and
Remove Programs,
No mentioning of Norton in Security Center anymore.

You did not mention it was a trial version. They install differently.

I'm sorry, in fact I did not install this trial version, my Acer laptop came
with a 90days trial version., that I uninstalled normally but it left me
with the remaining "Norton is turned on" in Security Center.
Thanks anyway.

That's good. Norton can screw up any computer (not to mention that it
can burden the computer such that it runs slower and slooooooower and
sl................).

I got this from MS support and it works.

1. Run remove from from the "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel.

2. Download from Symantec and run "Norton_Removal_Tool.exe," being sure to

get the one for your OS, Vista 64 in this case.

3. Reboot and remove the Symantec directories from the "Users" and "Program

Files" folders under C:\ Search for them.

4. This is the part that gets Norton out of "Security Services."
a. Start "Services".
b. Locate "Windows Management Instrumentation"
c. Right click and "Pause" that service.
d. Go to C:\Windows\System32\wbem\
e. In that folder, find a folder called "Repository".
f. Delete the entire folder "Repository".
g. Go back to "Services," (steps a. and b. above)
h. Right click on it and choose "Resume."
i. Close everthing and Reboot.
