| | My sidebar rearranges my gadgets The sidebar is a great idea... HOWEVER! I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 and every time I boot or restart the computer, my sidebar gadgets load out of order and I have to rearrange them back the way I want. Is there a way to lock them into place On the Sidebar so that I don't have to move them every time I boot up? |

| | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets This is one of the actual bugs in Vista. It is not that the gadgets are being rearranged. It is just that Vista forgets the arrangement you have chosen. Hopefully this will be fixed in SP1. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! | | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets Well, in one case, I found that using a cleaning program and deleting Window Log files was causing a problem. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! | | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets I'm feeling very generous tonight and will say that since the issue was reported during the public betas, it wasn't fixed because of prioritization of issues. While I agree it is frustrating, some would say it is cosmetic."Pipboy" wrote: > On Sun, 20 May 2007 09:44:55 -0400, Richard Urban wrote: > > > This is one of the actual bugs in Vista. | | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets I am very happy to have stumbled upon this topic. It is nice to at least know it is a bug. It is somewhat workable as it is right now with just the one sidebar panel, but for users that use more than one panel, I can see this being a real pain. As best as I can tell, the settings.ini file located here: ....\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar looks to be correct. It shows the right gadgets and the correct docking order. I agree, and hope this fix makes it into sp1. |

| Vista Home Premium x64-bit SP2 | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets Found a fix! ![]() * Close Windows Sidebar. To do so, right-click on the Sidebar icon in the Notification area and click Exit * Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. * In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press ENTER: regsvr32 msxml3.dll Similarly, run these commands: regsvr32 scrrun.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll If the registration was successful, you'll see the message DllRegisterServer in <filename> succeeded for each command executed. Open Windows Sidebar (sidebar.exe) and check if the problem is resolved. Move the gadgets to the place you want them and reboot. Problem will be fixed. |

| Vista Business X64 | Re: My sidebar rearranges my gadgets Okay, people - I have it finally! The problem is in the bugged executable "sidebar.exe", for some reason after I updated to SP2, it was replaced with the bugged one, but having the same version of 6.0.6002.18005.The good file size is 1.17 Mb, bugged one is 1.48Mb. You can take it from Vista x32 - it will perfectly work from Program Files folder despite it's x32. To get the proper copy of file I can post it to some filehostings, but you can find it by themselves. Then, to change the file you'll need to get proper permissions. To have these permissions you need to install "Take Ownership" regpatch and take the ownership of the whole folder Windows Sidebar, because the script doesn't work on executables (for some reason) and set Administrators group to have full access of the file "sidebar.exe" (located in Program Files\Windows Sidebar folder). Change file, close sidebar, then start it again. Now set the proper order of your gadgets and restart sidebar. That's it! To make regpatch just copy text into text editor and save it with proper name: ___________________________ InstallTakeOwnership.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas] @="Take Ownership" "NoWorkingDirectory"="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas\command] @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F" "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas] @="Take Ownership" "NoWorkingDirectory"="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas\command] @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t" "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t" ___________________________________ RemoveTakeOwnership.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas] [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas] Good Luck!
