Office 2003 Basic prompts UAC under Vista

I installed Office 2003 Basic with my new Vista OS computer and everything
runs fine, except I get the UAC administrative prompt every time I open
Outlook, Word, and Excel. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? It seems
strange to me that I need to give permission for a Microsoft application to
run every time. I have selected the "run as administrator" under each app.

Thanks!

UAC prompt with run as admin rights? Don't worry. That's normal and here is why :)

You pretty much said it right there.

Anytime an application tries to gain administrator access, whether pre-approved via the 'Run as administrator rights' in the compatibility tab of an application's properties window, a uac prompt will open.

It does seem silly but its actually for basic/novice computer users and your protection. For example, let's say a website tried to send you a 'file' called msword.exe which was msword.exe but came with a nasty little trojan/virus.

If your uac window didn't pop up and uac sees msword.exe and goes 'Oh Oh! I know this one! Its pre-approved! and gives it admin rights?', you'd have a major security problem in your os. However, fortunately uac was designed properly so you are prompted when this application tries to gain admin rights every time, even if pre-approved. This prevents websites from faking being a pre-approved program and gaining admin rights.

The way to avoid the prompt is to go back into the applications properties windows (right click, choose properties) and open the compatibility tab and deselect the 'Run as administrator rights' box. This will mean the program is being opened as a 'Regular' program which won't ask for admin rights and you won't get a uac prompt.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to let me know.

Not an expert but IIRC any program that is run as admin will request
permission each time.
