| | Is the parental control available in all versions of Vista ? I'm planning to buy a new computer for my son by using his old Compaq computer with the trade-in program from HP, the problem is that you must select a computer from a limited list of computers, these computer come with Vista Bussines edition, and I'm thinking that maybe the parental control feature comes only with the Home edition. I really need the parental control feature implemented, he is only 10 years old and I don't want the exposure to sex, and other dangerous websites Some advice will be greadly appreciated Carlos |

Get you son to show you how to set them up. What can I control with Parental Controls? You can use Parental Controls to set limits on the hours that children can use the computer, the types of games that they can play, the websites that they can visit, and the programs that they can run. a.. Set specific time limits on your children's computer use. You can set time limits to control when children are allowed to log on to the computer. Time limits prevent children from logging on during specified hours. You can set different logon hours for every day of the week. If they are logged on when their allotted time ends, they will be automatically logged off. For more information, see Control when children can use the computer. b.. Prevent your children from playing games you don't want them to play. Control access to games, choose an age rating level, choose the types of content you want to block, and decide whether you want to allow or block specific games. For more information, see Specify which games children can play. c.. Set limits for how your children use the web. You can restrict the websites that children visit, check an age rating, indicate whether you want to allow file downloads, and set up which content you want the content filters to block and allow. You can also block or allow specific websites. For more information, see Limit the content that children can view on the web. d.. Keep your children from running specific programs. Prevent children from running programs that you don't want them to run. For more information, see Prevent children from using specific programs. Once you've set up Parental Controls, you can set up activity reports to keep a record of your child's computer activity. For more information about activity reports, see Set up Parental Controls activity reports. |

She'll appreciate (as will the rest of us) being able to restrict your computer usage. Hopefully it can also block the NNTP protocol. It is included in Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate. The documentation available on the internet for this fact is scant. Here's the best I could find. 2. What SKU's will parental controls be in? Monday, April 10, 2006 5:18 PM by Brian Trenbeath (Program Manager) http://blogs.msdn.com/uac/archive/20...60.aspx#572802 Parental Controls SKU Availability http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms711663.aspx Also, note the "Applies to" line at the start of this article. The list does not include the Business or Enterprise editions. What can I control with Parental Controls? http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...cef3e1033.mspx I have two installations of Vista, one Business, the other Home Premium. Just out of curiosity, I checked each for the Parental Control feature. As I expected, it was present on the Home Premium system but not on the Business edition computer. Good luck Nepatsfan |

| | Re: Is the parental control available in all versions of Vista ? The Vista parental controls have a couple major drawbacks that you might want to be aware of: 1) Anyone with a password to an administrator account can change the settings. This might not seem to be an issue since most parents would setup their kids accounts as standard users, until you find out that standard user accounts cannot run some programs. For example, several games require an Administrator password. So, to run these programs you have to give your kids an admin password, which negates any advantage of the parental controls. 2) The time controls only allow control of the entire computer, not individual programs. So, for example, you cannot set a time limit on Internet browsing without affecting all other activities. The schedules are also limited to time periods without any way to control total duration 3) Selecting programs to block requires knowledge of the programs exe, which many parents may find intimidating 4) The activity reports are quite simplistic A better choice is to invest a few bucks in a quality third-party parental control. The one I use is PC Chaperone, available at http://www.pc-chaperone.com. It's very easy to use and has more features then you could imagine. For example, not only can you schedule Internet access, you can even schedule access to specific sites! I use this for my son to limit the time he spends on myspace and facebook without preventing him from using the rest of the web. Their Internet filters are also very good and very flexible. And they also have awesome reporting tools that will do everything from keystroke logging to Internet browsing activity logging to conversation logging for several instant messengers |
