    Help.

Hi. I could use some help..

I just bought myself vista ultimate32 retail box. But while opening it the
second dvd, ultimate64, were not fastened in any way. The dvd already got
    some scrathes...

Is this the way retail boxes are sold??

    best regards

    Re: Help.

normally no, but I am sure you can get it replaced if you take it back to
    where you bought it from...

don't accept a bad product..... but even if they deny you this change, which
    would be highly unreasonable,
then ms can send you a replacement disk, since the product key is what is
important and not the DVD media itself

(of course one might say that the bad product is the os itself and not the
    media but thats another story)

    Re: Help.

    Thank you for answering..

well there's another thing, I bought it non-used by a guy who won it in a
    contest..
It's all strange that ms would sell crappy boxes. I can also see by info on
these webpages that it's missing the plastic holding the box together by the
    red tape.

seems like it's been "tampered" with...

Any good ideas of what to do??

    thanks

    Re: Help.

well what is important is the product key...

Are you sure that he did not install it on another computer? because then
    that creates a big problem,

I dont want to alarm you... but you must know that vista is allowed to be
    installed on only one pc
at a time... if he has it installed on another pc, you might have a problem
    activating it...

If the disk can be read, then just make a copy of it and use the copy of the
    dvd to install...

as I said the media is not that important.. what is important is the product
    key.

Microsoft can give you a replacment dvd, I think you pay only for the
    shipping...

or you can use any other disk a friend might have... if it is the same type
    of vista as you have,
but in that case you will use YOUR product key.

I am telling you all I know... and hope it helps

    Re: Help.

hmmm on the other hand I think all dvd's are the same in the boxes...(if we
    are talking about 32 bit)
and only the product key is different according to your liscence,

    home basic, premium, busniness, ultimate

Thanks for the help, very helpful!

I will ask ms for another dvd, by the way; I only have one key. I understand
I have to uninstall 32 to use 64!

If you're copy has been used prepare for the key not working.
    You may have been conned.

Do you know the guy who sold it to you?

    Re: Help.

    Hi.

As I have learned ms only replace with oem versions of their product, wich
is totally out of question for me. Why else buy retail.
Since the seller won it, I doubt he got proof of purchase(he won two boxes).

I don't know him. He had an add in a used item web site(respected).

Either way I have sent him a mail.

Easy solution; can I use my old oem ult64 dvd with the retail key??

    best regards

    Extra info;

I picked it up at his home, paying him cash.

Waiting for a new motherboard, I'm not installing until it arrives because
    of drivers and raid setup!

    Re: Help.

What kind of contest? Can you contact the contest people? If not, contact
    Microsoft.

It's not so much a "crappy box" as it is that sometimes the disks come loose
from the center post due to shipping vibration and jolts. I've had that
happen on other non-Microsoft software too.

That's why I generally always buy my software either from the manufacturer
    or from a reputable reseller...
