Backup failure- Jill Zoeller

Last few days I've been unable to complete a file backup.

I've attached a screenshot.

The error says I don't have enough room, but I do.
It's backing up to a partition on an external drive
that has about 60GB of free space. The backup starts
and then that error appears about 5 minutes later.
I tried deleting all the previous backups and creating
a new one. That didn't work.

While this is not my primary backup, I still would like to
know why it isn't working.

Thanks for any suggestions, Jill.

Re: Backup failure- Jill Zoeller

I figured out the problem, Jill.

I added another program to test... one of
many- Carbonite Backup. It was interfering
with Vista's file backup. I don't know how,
but once I turned off Carbonite, the backup completed
successfully. The file backup failures seem to have started
at the same time I installed Carbonite Backup, too.

Oh well, maybe my experience will help someone else.

Take care,

Michael

And here I figured it was payback for all your evil ways. :-)

That may be the *real* reason it happened. :-)

Although, I'm far too sweet of guy to be totally
consumed by the dark side. ;-) A real evil slug
would have been cursed to suffer through countless
days of figuring the "why" out. :-)

Anyway, being the backup freak that I am, Acronis, CompletePC Backup,
and Paragon allow me to be quite "evil" to some of my machines. :-)
I go through these stages where I do more playing/testing of stuff
than I do actually using/enjoying my machines.

On a more serious note, Carbonite Backup is an interesting program.
However, I believe that's just a bit too redundant for even my anal redundant
redundancy of backups. :-)

I use both ATI and Complete PC Backup as well. I'm not familiar with
Carbonite. Is Paragon disk imaging? Does that work well? Similar to ATI?

Carbonite is an online backup program. http://www.carbonite.com/
It actually does what it says, and provides another way to keep important
files backed up. Which can be accessed from anywhere.

Paragon Drive Backup is like Acronis True Image, although I like TI better.
I will admit, I had a TI backup fail me two weeks ago. I have several TI backups,
an every other day image, a weekly image, a monthly image, and a "slim" image that
I make shortly after installing the OS. It only includes Office 2007 and NOD32.
Paragon does an automatic backup once a week and I used task scheduler to have
CompletePC run every day, Vista's file backup runs daily, too. Years ago, I had a
devastating loss of data.... never again. I also use the add-on for Outlook that
backs up my pst file every day. Anyway, like I was alluding to, I had a TI backup
fail, it was the second time (different computers) in three months. CompletePC
has never failed, and I've used it numerous times. The only way to know if a backup
will work is to test it. Even the "verify" image doesn't always guarantee it will work.

Of course, one that I failed to mention is Windows Home Server. It can backup
all the computers on your network. I have been beta testing that, and I'm a fan.
It also makes it so simple and easy (no geekness involved) to access your server
remotely and the shared folders on the other networked computers. Basically,
when you setup remote access you create a domain at xxx.livenode.com and
from there you access your server files or you can use remote desktop from there.
It's cool, especially for regular users who don't want to get all technical. You can
turn remote access on and off with the click of a button. As of now, setting up that
access site is free and I do believe it will be part of the "package".

Home Server backups your whole computer, if your computer fails, you put in
a bootable Home Server restore disc which then restores your computer from
the backup on the server. Or, you can run restore from the desktop... restore your
whole computer or view specific files. Still some kinks to work out with the components
that have been added to an otherwise rock solid Server 2003, but I have been
impressed. I've tried the total computer restore function twice on another machine,
and it worked well. As I've said several times, I like what Microsoft is doing with this...
I like it a lot.

Okay, enough already. Have a good day, Rock.

Take care,

Michael

Thanks for the detailed info, Michael. Same to you.

It's disconcerting TI failed, fortunately it hasn't failed for me, yet but
that's why I also use Complete PC backup for redundancy. I'm not quite as
deep in the backups as you are though.
