Vista Tutorial - Dowload updates from hp.com

I have a new computer, HP Pavilion MediaCenter TV PC. with
Windows Vista Home Premium
When I try to download updates from Hp.com update site, I can't download
nothing. All I get is a page that said, PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED. Check your
internet connection.
My internet connect is fine. I talked to my IP and they tryed difference
setting with firewall and had me check other things. He couldn't help. I
called HP Support was on the phone with then for hours. They didn't help. All
HP support did was foulup my computer so I had to go into a full recovery.
Checked with Help adn support person from Norton Security center, It has
nothing to do with Nortron.
I talked to a friend of mine who asked a friend of his about this problem.
He said there is a setting you have to change but he couldn't remember what
it is.

Hi, I have the same PC, except I got mine right before the Vista release. So
I did the Vista upgrade myself.

The major thing I've seen is that the HP Update program just doesn't seem to
work with Vista very well, even though there is assumed compatibility since
Vista is your operating system! In my thinking, you have some choices, but
be warned, there are based somewhat on personal preferences:

A) You can go from the Start menu and into the 'Control Panel'.
Double-click 'Programs & Features' (This used to be called Add/Remove). The
program is actually there, called 'HP Update'. You can Uninstall that
program there if you wish. This is somewhat of a personal preference. I
feel that HP updates and HP Help software is mainly bloatware and/or
software to get people dependent upon HP's running of the PC. But it is
solely up to the user's discretion there. I have kept HP Update on my
computer.

B) I think HP has put out an update to its Update program recently, though I
could be wrong. Check to make sure you have updated drivers for all your
hardware. Actually go to the HP site, go to the Drivers & Downloads section,
and enter your Desktop Model Number and go to the Vista Drivers page given
for that Model number and make sure you've installed every driver update
there. If there's an update for the HP Update software, it should be on
that page.

C) This is safe choice to try no matter what. From your Start menu, go to
All Programs and scroll down to where you see the program folders. Hp Update
should be there within the HP Folder, but don't click it all the way to
choose it. Just highlight 'HP Update' enough to where you can right-click on
it there. Choose Properties and then choose the Compatibility Tab. There
you can choose to run the HP Update program in an XP Compatibility mode or
whatever Windows mode you wish.

from HP.com, that is certainly different than dealing with the HP Update
program. In fact, you may want to give the HP Update program a try if
nothing else works.

Thank you, Frank Bright, for you respond. My problem was dowloading from
hp.com. I have solved the problem .
I found out that my DSL router also as a firewall with it. What I did was go
to that router firewall and lower the setting from medium to low. Now I can
download from hp.com. With all the experts I talked to no one of them thought
of this. With this computer, with Vista and the last computer with XP, the
people I sugggest you stay away from is HP support group. All caused me, with
both computers to have to go into full recovery and solve nothhing.

If you have a physical firewall with your router then the software firewall
needs to be turned off, because two firewalls will not work well together.

I'm glad you got it solved. I too have had bad experiences with HP support.
They will, without much thought at all, suggest you do a full recovery and
reformat. I was trying to do a partition once with them and they said 'Use
Your (self-made) Recovery Disk'. I swore up and down that the (self-made)
recovery disk was not giving me an option to create or pick a partition.
But they kept insisting that it would.

It turned out that I was correct. The self-made recovery disk is a One-Two
step to get your computer back to factory settings. Reformatting is a simple
'Yes or No' question. I have data backups, but I had to re-do my whole
system again for nothing.

They are especially good at sounding like experts on the phone and giving
you advice that sounds right at the time. Every time I've used them, I would
hang up and go to implement their solution, only to find that it was
half-baked and not completely thought through.

Every tech support person should begin by asking this simple question: What
peripherals are you running and what software have you recently installed?

Not at all true. *Many* people (including me) run both at the same
time without any problem at all.

Two *software* firewall can interfere with each other, but there's no
problem with the combination of a hardware and a software firewall.

I'll take your word for it. Maybe the problems I had were specific to the
router I have from my ISP, but when I turned off windows firewall they went
away. It didn't like McAfee firewall, either, but I'm getting rid of that
before installing any other software. I'm still trying to decide between AVG
and Avast for free AV until my ISP's software becomes Vista Compatible! LOL

Two software firewalls on the same computer can be problematic, but a
software firewall on the computer and a hardware firewall or a router with
NAT should not be a problem.

You might find that the HP ftp site for downloads insists on access to
a specific port and that your firewall had that blocked.
