Desktop icons don't change in Windows Vista

I was originally able to change my internet shortcut desktop icons on my
brand new computer. However, today one third of them still remain the way I
changed them and the rest go back to the generic internet shortcut logo.
When I try to change them back the changes will not apply. I can change them
to a completely new icon, but I cannot chage them back to the original icon
that I had for them. Thanks for any suggestions

Follow up question?

How come Windows Vista w/IE7 does'nt save the website logos when you create
a desktop shortcut like it does in Windows XP w/IE7?

Re: Desktop icons don't change in Windows Vista

Hi Mark--

My experience has been that folders' icons will stick and work like XP, but
shortcuts will not. There are a couple thousand icons intrinsic to Vista
and 3rd party programs installed on it, including any zip files, as well as
icons that show up when you add /favicon.ico to a url that has them, but
they must be substituted by right clicking a folder--it won't work with an
icon and I don't know the mechanics behind this. You could go to the Shell
Team blog and contact them to try to get an answer.

Re: Desktop icons don't change in Windows Vista

Hi,
I think you're up against IE7's attempts to use Favicons.

Here's a workaround...
You will have to do this for each shortcut and this will open each shortcut
in a new IE window.

Find "IExplore.exe" (probably in Program Files\Internet Explorer)
Right-click and drag IExplore.exe to the desktop and choose "Create
shortcut." Right-click that shortcut> Properties> Target, modify the Target
to include the URL.
Example:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" www.yahoo.com
Note a space between EXE" and ww
Rename the shortcut if desired.
Apply the custom icon.
Since it's no longer an Internet Shortcut, it's an .lnk (.LNK) file, IE7
should leave the icon alone.
