System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

My current system spec is
3000hz AMD Athlon processer
MSI K8NGM2 (Scoket 939) mother board
2 GB Ram 3200/ 400 Hz
Samsung 8X DVD writer
250 GB Hitachi HDD

Accordingly my hard ware should not have any problems installing Vista.
However, when I try to boot up my PC and install using the Vista home premium
edition (32 bit) DVD, my system just automatically restarts it self. So far
I have not been successful geting into the start up screen to install vista.

I suspect it is my mother board, however, MSI did publish that the mother
board is compatible with Vista. The current mother board works well with
installing WinXP Pro.

Can any one help ?

Re: System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

Hi Cooljay,

Did you check and make sure that you set your BIOS options to boot from CD/DVD first then hard drive? Plus, when you reboot with that enabled you have to press a key when the "Boot From CD/DVD" message pop ups.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

You are installing from inside an existing Windows XP install?
Or booting from the DVD?
If installing from XP, turn off or uninstall antivirus and
antispyware/security software.
It can interfere with writing necessary files to disk.
If you're booting from the DVD, make sure both it and the drive are clean.

I had a machine that gave me fits for months.
I would install XP on a feshly formatted HDD and after installation claimed
to have completed successfully; I would get error after error.
I swapped out everything, including the motherboard.
Still totally unexplained errors and different every time.
One day I accidentally grabbed the wrong XP CD and installed, I never had
another problem.
The Genuine MS CD was defective, not dirty, not scratched, just plain
defective.
I test installed on a fresh HDD on a different machine (disconnected the HDD
with XP installed on it first) and got the same results.
Rare, but it happens.

Re: System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

I am actually booting up and installing on a new hard disk. there was no pre
installed windows version. I connected the HDD to another computer and used
it to install Windows XP. the installation works well and I am able to log
onto windows. However when I reconnect this hard dsk back to my system, the
system just restarts itself continuously once windows starts to boot.

My processor is AMD 3000 64 bit. and the windows version is a 32 bit version
.. is that what is causeing the problem?

Hi Cooljay,

That would be causing it. When you installed XP on the other computer it set up XP with that computer's hardware configuration. When you put it in your computer it still thinks that it's in the other one and thus the problem since your hardware is not the same. You will need to do the installation on the computer you want it to stay on. You might try booting from the installation DVD and running the install with the save current programs and data option (backup). You might get it to work that way without loosing everything, otherwise it will be a clean install. Plus, for Vista, you can only have the product key number installed on only one computer or it will not activate.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the advice. But that still does not slove the problem of not
being able to using Vista. I think right now my more critical problem is
that I am not able to boot up my PC using Vista be it booting from DVD or
from HDD.

It is giving me a very bad headache. Thanks .

Re: System restarting itself during booting up Vista DVD

Cooljay,

You might try taking the harddrive back to the other computer and formating it and then try it again in your computer for installation from boot dvd to see if it's the hard drive or your computer.

Also, some quick questions:

1. Is it a SATA or ATA harddrive?
2. Since it works for XP Pro, did you update your motherboard with the latest BIOS for better compatibilty?
3. Did you double check your BIOS settings for the appropriate settings?

Ok Cooljay,

Yep, IDE (Old school). Now called ATA because of SATA. It's the same.

Sure I'll help you on the BIOS. I looked up your motherboard, but I got 4 models with that one.

Which one is yours?
1. K8NGM2-FID
2. K8NGM2-L
3. K8NGM2-IL
4. K8NGM2-NBP
