Using Vista on a Desktop and a Laptop, what is the best method to transfer
data files between systems?

I'm sure you are aware there are many options...
CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, Memory cards, and
of course...the included file transfer capabilities
of Vista as described in the following articles:

(and as discussed in all of the following articles...
I'm thinking the use of a USB File Transfer Cable
would be worth investigating)

Re: Vista File Transfers

Right. What type of files would you like to transfer? Simple documents can
be transfered using a floppy or flash drive, while larger can be transfered
by cd, dvd, or a transfer cable. Also, a simple network could be established
between the two. If you are looking to backup or transfer your settings to a
new computer, windows has wizards for that.
