| Guest | Windows Explorer question I have a new CP with Windows Vista: When using Windows Explorer I want to see contents of folders always as 'list' -- I don't need 'details' and I don't like 'thumbnails'. Is there a way I can set it up once and for all and not have to adjust every time I change folders? Thanks in advance. -- Tony Vella, Ottawa, Canada http://indian-biographies.shorturl.com |

| Guest | Re: Windows Explorer question Tony, You should be able to set that globally. Open up a folder and set the display the way you like it. Then hit Tools -> Folder Options. Select the "View" tab. Scroll down the list and make sure "Remember each folders view settings" is unchecked, then click the "Apply to Folders" - it should make it do what you want. I keep saying "should" because I've noticed that sometimes if you change a folder display temporarily, it changes everything so you may have to reset them occasionally. Note also that you may have to do this for different types of folders. I've noticed that Vista seems to treat folders with pictures and music separately so it may need them set as well. Hope that helps! To add to Mark's post there are at least five templates that Vista uses and each has to be set. Go to a folder such as \Users, right click on it, Properties, Customize. Under "Use this folder as template" click the down area to see all the types. You'll need to set the view you want in a folder that uses each template. And then after doing that, you'll find Vista has a habit of forgetting the settings from time to time. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

So if I select properties for users knowing that the subdirectories are of different types where are the views that will be used for each type. This is such a crazy way that vista randomly and without reason changes views. Could you give a step by step instructions on how to set the properties for each folder type that vista supports. Also how does Vista decide which template to use for each folder?` Does this have enough visibility to get something setup that assures that each template gets sets and does not change. Also how does Vista decide which template to use for each folder?` |

Also how does Vista decide which template to use for each folder?` You can see the different types of templates here and how to change them. Vista decides on what template to use by what file types are in the folder. (EX: .jpeg, .exe, .wav, etc....) Windows Explorer - Folder Type Templates Shawn |

Also how does Vista decide > which template to use for each folder?` > There is always an easy way? When looking at columns in Explore. Right click in the header area and choose from the drop menu what you need to see as headers and to size the columns. Click "More" at the bottom of the menu at set these as Permanente choices. -- Ian With patience there is always a way. Please Reply to Newsgroup so all can read.
