My 2Gb, duo-core Dell laptop seems to beat the disk drive constantly.
Is there a good tool to investigate what is hitting the disk so much and
maybe why?

the 4 monsters of vista dungeon:
superfetch
disk defrag
windows defender
shadow copy
result: disk meltdown from constant thrashing :-)

There's also the indexing service (used for fast searches), but the
frequency depends on how often you drop files onto your desktop. If you save
a lot of multimedia, you'll get slammed.

Open the Reliability and Performance Monitor. From Start | type in
Reliability. Click on it at the top left. Elevate. In the right pane
expand the disk section to see what files are being accessed by what
processes. Use the PID for the process, then open task manager, on the
process tab highlight the process with that PID, right click, Go to
Service(s). That will open the services tab with all he services running
under that process highlighted.
