So... IE opens when you boot your PC? What page is shown when IE opens
    automatically?

It doesn't actually open a page but my toolbar at the bottom shows that i am
connected to the internet. previously with XP i connected manually as and
    when i wanted.

Are you using a broadband connection?

If yes, then you are always "connected" to the Internet. "Connected"
in this sense just means your PC and your ISP's computer are in
contact with one another and with send signals back and forth on a
regular basis to in effect keep the connect up. This takes up very
little bandwidth and is nothing to be worried about.

I think there is an option to show the icon or not. Perhaps on your
old system it was set to not show the icon. So it may have been doing
the same thing and making the connection on the old machine but you
just never saw the icon letting you know about it.
