Mac,

Thank you for responding. Yes, I viewed those links prior to my posting
here, and they did not seems to address my specific issue. I contacted HP
(Mfg of system) and they suggest a complete recovery. I guess I'll have to
go that route.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Unable to Perform a File Backup Error: (0x81000101)

i had this same problem. backup failed and all subsequent attempts resulted in the same error 0x81000101.

first it was suggested that i do a system restore from a point prior to the backup error's first occurence. i got the same error 0x81000101 and was unable to do the system restore.

then i turned off system restore and turned it back on. this deletes all of the prior restore points.

then restarted the computer and the backup worked.

now i'd like to know why my backup is larger than the entire contents of my C: and D: drives combined????

Here's a second to CrawfishJHughes suggestion. I followed his
suggestion--turned off System Restore (deleted about 20 restore points).
Then I tried to turn off the computer, but it hung up on this, too. So I
turned off the computer switch, and turned it back on. Everything rebooted
fine--I ran backup successfully, then turned system restore back on. Thanks
alot--wouldn't have thought to do this without the instructions.

Re: Unable to Perform a File Backup Error: (0x81000101)

We have an HP 2v2500 laptop with Vista Ultimate 32.

I also followed the advice of CrawfishJHughes and turned restore off.
It was 5 restore points, amounting to about 3.5 GB on the system
partition. Shutting down it took minutes!

But backup was able to run again.

I discovered something else, on a hunch.

chkdsk has NEVER run on the system partition. Even on Day 1 of
ownership.

With restore turned off, it ran on the second boot attempt.

Thank you, CrawfishJHughes. How did you ever figure that out?

I get the feeling that Windows Vista is incompatible with itself.

This worked for me. Thanks crawfish! Plus I had to enable virtual disk. LOL.
