Too many items in start menu

This is most annoying... I've started getting this error message telling me
there are too many items in start menu and to try a different resolution!
For god's sake! Is this talking about the pinned items and/or the recently
opened items or what? Surely not the items in the actual start menu. There's
not that many there! I've only had the computer a few days. I'm not even
done loading everything yet. I've organized the shortcuts in the start menu
into folders and subfolders. My video card is set to 1600 dpi and I'm using
large fonts. I keep my taskbar on the top. I've noticed Vista doesn't really
like that....notice how the start menu is slightly beneath the taskbar at
the top. Also, the impact of the error message is that the start menu is no
longer flush left but offset a bit. I'm attaching a screen capture of this
(though I can't catch the error as it doesn't stay up).

Thanks for any insights.
Sheila

Re: Too many items in start menu

You can change the number if items to display (I have 30) and select small
icons, as I have done, even still you will still get this stupid message -
as I do...

Re: Too many items in start menu

It is the number recently opened items you have on your Start Menu.

Right click on the Start Orb, select Properties, Start Menu tab, Customize
button, Start menu size (middle of main page below the scrollable window) adjust
Number of recent programs to display: until the notification goes away.

No need to change your resolution.

Re: Too many items in start menu

WOW...thanks for the speedy responses. I'm sad to report that even after
changing the number to 30 and making icons small this message still appears.
Maybe I need to reboot for those changes to take affect. I'll keep my
fingers crossed. It's certainly annoying! Thanks again for the help.

Re: Too many items in start menu

I tried moving my task bar to the top, and the start menu doesn't overlap...
you might try unlocking it, moving it to the side or bottom, and back up to
the top.... just to see if that changes it.

Re: Too many items in start menu

No need to reboot, you have to go further down (1680 X 1050 res. here) if I go
above 18, I get the nag.

Re: Too many items in start menu

Start at some ridiculously low number and keep increasing until you get the nag.

Re: Too many items in start menu

Thanks Dave: It doesn't always do this. It happens when I get the nag. Last
time I fixed it by deleted a bunch of stuff in recently visited. When I move
it to the bottom it's fine but when I move it back to the top it's still
off-set like this. I'm a bit surprised there's no way to disable this either
within Vista or with some add-in. I don't know how Mac puts up with it. It's
totally unacceptable to me! Maybe it'll have a fix with SP1....

Hi,

Use Vista Start Menu program and you see all items at once -
