Latest Vista Updates Prevent Network Recognition With Me

Simply wondering why this is and whether one ought to scrap Vista in favour
    of XP.

    Hi David

I guess you mean that you cannot connect from Windows Me to Windows Vista
(and/or, vice versa) over the network?

This is a well-known problem, and is actually "by design". Whether it was a
good design, I will leave you to judge. Windows 95, 98 and Me used a older,
less secure form of authentication called LanMan. Windows XP and Vista use
more secure authentication, called NTLMv2. On XP, it NTLMv2 is optional.
Vista is designed to be a secure operating system, so NTLMv2 is turned ON by
default, and other less secure forms are all turned OFF. This is to protect
the Vista machine from being compromised from the relatively insecure
    Windows 98/Me machines.

In order to connect to Windows Me from Vista, you will need to install the
NTLMv2 client onto the Windows Me machine. The NTLMv2 client is variously
known as the "Directory Services Client" or "Active Directory Client". You
can download the client from here:
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...dsclient9x.msi

More information about installing the DS Client is here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869

More background about the problem is in this article:
File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx
.... especially the section entitled "Cannot Authenticate to a Shared Folder
    from a Windows Vista-based Computer".

If NTLM authentication does NOT seem to match the specific networking
problem you're seeing, I'd suggest you reply back to this newsgroup with a
more detailed description of exactly what the problem is.

    Hope it helps,
    Andrew
