Windows Explorer Folder Views

ok im using the 2 pane view in explorer.
the left pane displays all the hard drive partitions & folders and the right
pane displays the contents of the folders.

when clicking the little arrows next to the folders in the right pane it not
only expands the main folder but it expanders all the sub-folders too and its
annoying the hell out of me (i want to choose which folders open and which
dont!) and so far ive found no way to stop it happening!! Windows XP had the
option but it seems to be missing in Vista

so is there any way of stopping this????
