Should I even bother upgrading?

I'm a bit leery about upgrading my computer to the new Vista and even more so
now that I've read some of the problems it has. Should I even risk loading
it? Do the pros outweigh the cons?

No. Don't do it.

One question.... are you happy with the way your computer is running at the
moment ?

If yes then why bother unless you like exploring

Pro's and Con's are very subjective. I have upgraded from XPPro to Vista
Business then to Ultimate with only a few minor annoyances, mostly through
my own fault..

Re: Should I even bother upgrading?

No one here can answer that question for you, especially when you give
no information.

But my guess is you have no need to upgrade.
Windows XP will probably be supported for many more years to come so
if that is your current operating system, you will be fine.

Why are you considering upgrading?
What do you hope to gain by upgrading?

As for the problems, that depends on many factors such as Windows
Vista compatibility of essential hardware and software.
By their nature, newsgroups such as these draw people with problems
similar as hospitals draw sick people.

My suggestion is that unless it has something you really want then I
wouldn't upgrade. Don't get me wrong there is a lot to like and something's
to not like and something's that take time to get used to. It is a good
upgrade. I don't think it should have taken 5 years to get it out, but that
is neither here nor there. I would wait to upgrade until something hardware
or software that you want comes out that requires Vista minimum.

If you decide to go ahead it isn't hard to do and I had few issues. I do
suggest you make a list of your hardware and then check for Vista drivers
from the makers of the hardware and have those downloaded and ready to go.
Overall I have had very few problems. The problems that I have had aren't
bug or incompatibility problems but problems with the way Microsoft changed
something's. This falls under the give it time to get used to it heading and
not something that I consider much of an issue. If you can get Vista drivers
for all of your hardware and your current computer can handle Vista (I had
to upgrade my Video card) then you should have few issues. I still however
recommend that you think hard and consider if you really need what Vista
offers. Keep in mind that a lot of the changes are under the hood and not
something that the user will see. These things will come in to play in a few
years just as we are now starting to see software and some hardware that
require Windows XP minimum.

Re: Should I even bother upgrading?

Hi,

A negative outlook will almost certainly lead to negative results.
Questions:

- Why do you feel the need to consider upgrading?
- Is there something in Vista you need that is not available otherwise?
- Does a program you want to run require Vista to be installed?
- Have you checked to see if your computer hardware and installed programs
are compatible?
- What problems have you read about that concern you?

Remember, no one complains about successes.

Most competent consultants say: no. Better to wait for at least SP1.

Re: Should I even bother upgrading?

Uh oh. My feeling of need was because it was new and fun. I don't need it at
all, no programs are Vista only that I have, DX10 gaming is slow in
coming....

But, I love Vista. Wouldn't go back to XP for my main machine for
anything (well..... )

Should the average user upgrade? Probably not. Most of the time the PC isn't
up to snuff, and it'd be cheaper to buy a new PC with Vista pre-installed.
It's possible to wait for your next PC purchase to upgrade. I've only had a
couple of very minor problems with Vista and they were quickly resolved.

And I've seen a couple people in here complain about successes!
