CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Busines

Hi:
Can someone please offer me some assistance. I have been running Windows
Vista Business on my PC since March and a new problem just occurred. Both of
my optical drives (a Sony CDRW and an LG DVDRW) have suddenly and without
warning stopped working in Windows. The windows device manager shows both
drives but in the properties window it indicates that even though the drivers
are installed the devices have failed to start. I have uninstalled and
reinstalle the device drivers several times and attempted to upgrade the
device drivers and nothing seems to help. Using a non windows diagnostic
tool I am able to read and write to both optical drives but windows vista
cannot. I have tried clean boot and safe boot and still neither drive works.
I have restore windows to a previous iteration from a date that I know I
successfully used the cdr to install an application and still no joy. Does
anyone have any idea how to get this fixed without reinstalling windows and
all of my applications? Help!

Re: CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Busines

try this first:
put a boot cd of any operative system, check if system can boot from cd.
obviously, do this from dvd and cdrom units.
on the other hand, i suppose you have some registry error so, why not
to try system restore?,
Carlos.

Re: CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Busines

Does the BIOS see / recognize them?
Are they both set to Slave? ( or Cable Select )

Re: CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Bus

Thank you for your response to my posted question. I have been able to boot
the computer using a cd. I have also done several system restores to dates
prior to the cd not working. The cd will boot, the bios recognizes the cd
and dvd and identifies both and windows recognizes and identifies them in
device manager. However, device manager has a yellow exclamation mark on
both cd and dvd icons and the error message is "This device cannot start.
(Code 10)". Hope somebody knows what's going on and can provide a solution.

Re: CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Bus

Thank you for your response to my posted question. Yes the Bios sees both
optical drives and identifies them properly, I can boot an operating system
from the optical drive and windows device manager recognizes them and
identifies them properly, it just gives the error message "This device cannot
start. (Code 10)". Hope somebody can help.

Re: CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Busines

Yes, pretty much. You just need to open your registry editor by going to 'Start > Start search > REGEDIT> Click CONTINUE'.

This will start up your registry editor. Your registry is like the background giant storage of all settings in Windows virtually. Here, you click the 'Plus' symbol beside different areas to expand that section. Start by finding H_KEY_Local_Machine and click the 'Plus' symbol byside it. Next click plus beside 'System'. then 'Current Control Set'. Then 'Control'. Then 'class'. Then (This is the hard part but its usually the first one ending in E965, find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and click the plus beside it. The full path is as below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now your almost done. Here you should see (1) (2) (3) listed underneath and properties. Properties is inaccessible but there will be one number for each of your drives (including virtual drives) on your pc.

Click on '1'. On the right hand side different settings for your cd/dvd-rom drives. If you see one called Upper Filters. Left click on it to select it and hit the delete key on your keyboard. If you see one called 'Lower filters', right click on it to select it and hit the delete key on your keyboard.

Repeat this step with 2, 3, 4, etc.

Your done, restart your pc and your drives should show up =)
