Vista - Vista Restore onto new hard drive

I have Vista Ultimate and took a full backup of my system onto CD. I
have replaced my hard drive so now I am doing a full system restore on
the same computer

I have done it successfully with the existing hard drive multiple
times, but with my new hard drive it hangs after going into the bios.

For the record, the hard drive is almost the same. They are both SATA
Seagate 500 GB hard drives, one model numbers is AS, the other NS.

I don't believe there are any jumper settings on the new SATA hard
drive. Is there any type of sysprep I need to do to the original image?

What program did you use to backup your files? Unless you made a clone image
of your HD like with Norton Ghost or Acronis Drive Image Pro, chances are
your HD is missing some system files from your original install.

Good news is most of your other files are in tact, probably the easiest way
from here is to boot from the Vista install DVD, and perform an upgrade
install onto the new HD.

Since you have a backup still I'd try this, if it fails you might try
putting your NEW hard drive as your secondary HD, then run the software that
came with your new HD. Often times HD makers pack utility CDs that allow you
to clone your old HD to the new one, then you just swap the old HD out and
let the new one take over.

I used both the imaging utility in Vista and ghost, so I have two
separate images. Both work fine with the old hard drive, but with the
new hard drive it just hangs at a cursor and doesn't boot. I'm
positive the image completed because I boot up with a BART PE disk and
see files have written to the C drive. In the old days doing something
like fdisk /mbr or sys c:\ would fix a hanging cursor.

Everything I read about SATA disks say there is no master/slave
relationship, so I can't figure out what it is hanging.

What version of Ghost ?
Normally Ghost 12 is required to handle the Vista Ntfs offset.
If you used an earlier version, provide specifics since only a few methods and only from an Ghost boot disk or Ghost Emergency cd can done. Any prior version used in a Windows Vista GUI environment, including those where Ghost was present on an earlier o/s(XP) then Vista upgraded on top will not function.
