any way to restore files backed up in vista to a system running xp?

I'm trying to help someone who used the vista backup and restore utility to
back up his music, photos, etc.

Now he's running XP.

What is the best way to get his files off of the five DVDs he created as
part of the backup process?

Thanks for any suggestions.

If the person used the Vista backup utility to create a backup, this backup
can not be utilized by Windows XP.

If all the person did was to copy (many call this backing up also) the data
to DVD's, they should be able to just copy the data back to the computer
after XP in installed.

Unfortunately they did use the vista backup utility. Thanks for the reply.

Load a copy of Vista temporarily using Microsoft Virtual PC and extract
the files then back them up again with a more generic utility like
Acronis TrueImage.
