Cyrillic Problem!

Hi Everybody! I've been seeking for an answer for this problem for a quiet a
while now! Just go to www.google.com and do a search for "ilyabyk83", I'm
sure you will find same like post on different forums! I have a BIG problem
with seeing others peoples writing in my MULTI-SERVER Chat program. It
supports a lot of different servers, including ICQ - which has a Russian
version; it also has AIM, MSN, YAHOO and some others. Well let's go back to
ICQ, since there is a Russian version of it, a lot of Russian speaking people
use ICQ. They are obviously citizens and reside in Russia; I was born in
Russia 24 years ago, but came here only when I was 13, you can do the math. I
can type and read in Russian still. I finished 7 grades over there, so still
remember a bit. Not the point. The point is that I do talk to a lot of
Russian speaking people, and I obviously write to them in Russian. I
installed a second INPUT language on my computer, so I can switch to it and
write. In Internet Explorer, when I visit a web site with a Russian language
(written in encoding "Cyrillic Windows" or "Cyrillic K-0IR8") and I simply
change the encoding, I can read it perfectly. Next thing I found on
www.cereleunstudios.cc forum, which I need to install a FONT with Cyrillic
support, so I did. I have the font installed properly. I open my Microsoft
Office Word, select that font that I installed, switch to "Russian", and I
can write perfect. I can also write perfect and see, as I mentioned before,
in Internet Explorer. I do Russian searches on www.google.com, in my multi
client program, I also have an option, to use "UTF-8" encoding for my ICQ
medium, and I have it checked. Now, as I kind of figured out already, the
problem is with other sides "Encoding". I figured it out by, have ONLY one
person from Russia, whose ENCODING I can read perfect. Her computer is
obviously set to a same or compatible encoding as me! But I have about 45
friends, and she is the only one, whose writing I see! So I am doomed over
here. Called my DELL support, they can't help, called Microsoft, they don't
know what to change. I am DOOMED! LoL Can somebody please send me in a right
direction to fix this? I really Appreciate your help!

RE: Cyrillic Problem!

Hi, Ilya, My name is Sasha and I have a similar kind of a problem. If you are
using the ICQ (5.1, 6.0 or any other version) client, you can try setting the
location as Russia and the format to Russian, that's what I did in XP. Also,
if you install an alternate ICQ client, like QIP ( www.qip.ru ) the problem
can be resolved.

RE: Cyrillic Problem!

Привет Саша! Thank you for your help! Unfortunately I'm not using neither of
the programs. Я пользуюсь програмой по имени Trillian, It's like the program
you are talking about! I figured something out with a use of a second
computer. People from Russia use a different code page. (If you know what
that is). I created a second ICQ account, and chatted from one comp to
another. And I was able to see every single word! Moreover, I have a friend
in Moscow, whose Russian I see fine! So I'm doomed here!

RE: Cyrillic Problem!

Oh, you use Trillian, I see. I thought it could have been GaIM, but why would
you ask on a Vista forum then..
I can see that you found a solution, but if anybody else is wondering, you
can go to the Control Panel->Reginal and Language
Options->Administrative->Changesystem locale->Russian(Russia)

RE: Cyrillic Problem!

That would set all non-Unicode encoding to KOI8-R.

Hi d.marie

I guess you have English-language Vista, right? (If you had
Russian/Ukranian/Serbian version, you would be typing in Cyrillic already!
:-).

You need to turn on the appropriate Cyrillic keyboard. Follow the steps on
this page:

Enable Windows to support typing text in another language
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/he...295481033.aspx

This is a Office website, but the steps apply equally to all Windows
applications running on Vista. Another page, covering much the same
information, is here:

Windows Help: Change your keyboard layout
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...5dfe61033.mspx

Hope it helps,
