Installing an earlier DirectX

I have Vista Ultimate with DirectX 10, but I have such a problem that I need
to install DirectX 9.0c to run some apps. How do I install an earlier
DirectX? I downloaded its setup and installed, but there still remained
version 10.

As far as I know DXDIAG will show the latest version but you can have
multiple older versions also installed for backward compatibility.

Try the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (which supports Vista, as to
System Requirements):

Vista includes DirectX 9.0L, which should run what you need to run. If
you're missing some of components (for example, the managed runtime) you
can update them from here:
