Folder Views constantly changing

I have both a Vista 32 Bit and 64 Bit box both with the same annoying trait,
that is no matter what folder view you set in always at some point changes to
something completly different.

For example a music folder set to Music Details in Deatils View will change
to Large Icons or a root folder set to All Items will change to Music Details.

I have seen a lot of posts on here and on the www and tried all the "fixes",
the only one that seems to come close is disabling folder snoop but even then
the 32 bit box has started changing its views by magic again.

If I delete the Bags and BagMRU files the problem cures for a few hours and
returns.

Its been six months since Vista offically launched, I can't see anything on
the MS Knowledge base about this issue and becuase I have an OEM version I
can't report the issue directly to Microsoft as the online reporting tool
says I have invalid product keys. Obviously I'm supposed to report issues to
my vendor but I bought these OEM licences myself from a Trade supplier,
obvioulsy a downside of the OEM licence.

Does anyone know if the guys at Redmond are taking this issue seriouly and
develop a fix, it may seem a trivial issue but it is a very frustrating issue.

Cheers.

I meant to bookmark it but forgot... somebody a few days back made
reference to some fix where you can alter the Registry to increase the
size of some setting that supposedly will "remember" your Explorer
settings better. Apparently what can happen the custom settings get
overwritten with Vista defaulting to what it expects to find in
certain types of folders. So it tries to show thumbnails in graphic
folders, etc.. Maybe somebody recalls or saved the article I'm
referring to.

Hi Robert,

Go to this link and follow the directions on it. It will show you how to reset the folder view settings and increase the cache size so Vista will remember again with a longer memory attention span. (haha)

Hope this helps,

Re: Folder Views constantly changing

I assume for the silence except for the reply from Adam everyone is fed up
with the issue. I guess it's a case of put up with it or go back to XP,
believe me I am sorely tempted to do for the 32 bit box that is badly
misbehaving with Vista.

MS must be aware of the issue, why don't they say anything about, I can't
find anything on the official KB.

Hi Robert W,

Did you increase the cache size from my link above? It is a critical part of helping Vista remember again. (Second method)

Hi Brink

I have already tried this aswell, albeit I increased the setting to 10000 as
recommended elsewhere. The weird thing is the settings seem for the most part
to hold on Vista 64 bit system just not the 32 bit system. I will apply the
20000 setting and give it a bash.

I actually thought it was an issue with a folder containing around 60gb of
music, so I created a new folder and started copying the folders across. I
got to around the 20th folder having already set custom views for each
previous folder and bam, rigt in front of my eyes the folder lost its views
and even thr root of the drive though it was a music folder. It really is
enough to make a grown man cry given the time spent on customising views.

As I say I will give the increased setting a try, I fear I may do a rebuild
in case there is some weird corruption in the registry causing this.

Thanks
