lost hard disc memorary after upgrading to Vista home basic

Earlyer this year I upgraded from Windows XP SP2 to Windows Vista Home Basic.

Before i inserted the upgrade disc I had 110GB free disc space left from a
hard disc of 160GB in total. After putting in the upgrade vista disc in and
it taking several hours to upgrade to windows Vista home basic I checked the
space left on my hard disc

and it said I had 92GB of free disc space left. That ment I have lost a
total of 18GB

of disc space. I am wondering where has this 18GB of free disc space gone to
and

how i can get it back on my computer. Because of the limitations of Vista
Home basic I am going to upgrade to Windows Vista Premium after upgrade of

graphics card and increase to 2GB of ram memorary. I am conserned that i
might lose further hard disc space and I would like to know how to prevent
this and get

the other 18GB of free disc space back. I would be grateful for any
suggestions as how to solve this problem. I would like to say any body who
has a present computer with windows XP SP2 and are thinking of upgrading to
windows Vista

not to upgrade unless it is realy necessary as vista slows your computer
down by half and it means further memorary upgrades.

I have Vista Home Premium installed in a separate partition together with
about 20 applications including MS Office etc and the total disk space used
is about 16Gb. You say your Vista installation has taken 18Gb, this does not
seem unreasonable. Are there any remnants of Windows XP and temporary files
remaining after your upgrade which you can now delete to recover disk space?

Re: lost hard disc memorary after upgrading to Vista home basic

Look for a windows.old folder on your HD..........this is where Vista placed
the old XP installation if you chose to install the upgrade of Vista as a
new installation.

When you upgrade Vista stores a copy of your old version of Windows.

System Restore reserves 15% of TOTAL hard drive space, not free space
