Newest windows vista updates messed with navigation pane?

After a recent vista update, I noticed that the navigation pane in certain
programs like FireFox, paint shop pro, have been altered severley. There is
only 2 items in the navigation pane now, computer and recent places. How can
I get a more complete list like there use to be before these updates? Please
suggest something other than "roll back to a previous update". And also this
problem does not occur under IE 64 bit. Thanks.

Please direct your question to a Microsoft MVP. The rest of us are not

Have a nice day.
