Outlook 2007 - pst Backup - How?

I want to backup my Outlook 2007.pst file and can not do it. Copying the file
fails, with an message saying part of the file is locked by another process.

I downloaded and installed MS pfbackup.exe and it installed fine. However,
"Backup" does not appear in the File dropdown menu.

How do I simply backup/copy the .pst file?

Try this first: make sure that Outlook 2007 is closed -- and when I say
"closed," I mean ensure that it is neither running in the Notification Area
nor in the background as a process. You may have to kill the process via
Task Manager.

Re: Outlook 2007 - pst Backup - How?

You could export from Outlook to another .pst file (use the date as a name)
and copy that file.

Don,

Have you simply tried uninstalling and then reinstalling
pfbackup? I have it working in Outlook 2003 and 2007.

Also- do you have Aim with Plaxo installed? Either close Aim
first, or look in Tools>Trust Center>Add-ins. Then, at the bottom,
you'll see "Manage: COM Add-ins", click "Go". Uncheck anything
that says "Plaxo" or "Aim", or use the "Remove" button.
It is possible that it could be some other add-in, too.

Re: Outlook 2007 - pst Backup - How?

Jason And Dave,

Thank you both for the very prompt reply. Dave, I normally don't going
messing around with the processes, but will certainly try that. Do you or
Jason know whether the pfbackup program is compatible with OL 2007/Vista? I
got wind of it from the OL 2007 Help. ?????

Jason, I will try your solution also.

I would think that MS would have a more straightforward way to backup OL, but.
...

Thanks again. I'll let you know how I make out.

Re: Outlook 2007 - pst Backup - How?

Michael, Jason, & Dave,

Michael, I did not try to reinstall pfbackup. One question, do you have it
running on Vista OL 2007? I assume yes, but thought I would make sure. The
rest of your suggestion is beyond me at the moment. I need to reread it.

Jason,

Your workaround worked. In fact by turning off OL process, I was able to use
my normal backup program, Karen's Replicator. Dave, I never tried your
approach, but I suspect it would work also.

Finally, Michael, if I want to uninstall pfbackup, how would I do it, since
it is not in the Program list. I realize I could simply reinstall over
whatever is installed now, but...

At any rate thanks to all of you.

Re: Outlook 2007 - pst Backup - How?

I don't have OL 2007, I have 2003. but I was able to copy the .pst file,
even while OL2003 was running.

The Outlook Personal Folders Backup does work on Outlook 2007. I haven't
tried to install it on an OL running under Vista, but here is the fix
for when you've installed it and the Backup entry doesn't appear under
the File Menu:

1. Run cmd as Administrator by going to the Start Orb and typing "cmd"
in the Search box (without the quotes). Then right-click on the cmd link
that appears and choose "run as Administrator". Navigate to c:\program
files\microsoft office\office11\Addins - be sure and check whether this
is office 10, 11, or 12. Please note that this location is for a WinXP
box so you'll need to check the location on a Vista machine.

At the command prompt type:

regsvr32 outbak.dll [enter] and you should get the "successful" dialog box.

2. Open Outlook>Tools>Options>Advanced>COM addins and Add outbak.dll by
browsing to the same location as above.

Now the Backup option will appear in the File menu.

After you get the Personal Folders Backup installed, start it and change
the backup options to save the .pst file somewhere you are permitted,
such as to your user account's Documents or to an external hard drive,
server, etc.
