How to find program options page?

I turned on my newer laptop and had an ERROR message that stated...
"could not locate a valid definitions file. Please go to the programs option
page
and click "update definitions" to download a definitions file..

** How do I locate this program option page? where is it and can someone
lead me in the proper direction?
Thanks

Additional info required -
Did windows bootup?
Did it open to the desktop?

RE: How to find program options page?

A definitions file is for either Windows Defender (Spyware), or your
Anti-Virus program, whatever anti-virus came preinstalled on your computer.

So, either go to the programs via Start> All Programs> Anti-virus/ Defender
and open, then download updates
Or right-click on their icons in the taskbar near the time, and open or
update from there.

Sounds like your AV program is saying it can't find a valid definitions
file. What AV program are you using? Open that program and follow
directions.

Re: How to find program options page?

I had this problem to and I couldn't find useful information -- I discovered
it was due to my spy sweeper (webroot) -- Search your spy sweeper for "
update threat definitions " here's the instructions for mine...

To update the Spy Sweeper definitions manually:
1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.

2. In the Icon panel, click Options.

3. Click the Update tab.

4. Under Auto-Update, deselect the Automatically download Spy Sweeper
definitions if available option. (You should leave the Automatically check
for Spy Sweeper updates option enabled, so Spy Sweeper can notify you when
new definitions are ready.)

5. Under Update Now, click Update Spy Sweeper.

Spy Sweeper opens your Web browser and displays the Webroot Web site. The
Web site indicates whether your version of the program is current or if an
update is available. If new definitions are available, Spy Sweeper downloads
and installs them from the Webroot Web site. A progress bar shows the status
of the download.

Hope this helps.
