Search indexer

Just recently I started to get an error on boot up "Microsoft Search Indexer
has stopped working". When I run 'check online for solution' it runs for a
bit then disappears.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: SearchIndexer.exe
Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Application Timestamp: 4549b667
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bdc9
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00062086
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 1d8b
Additional Information 2: b5915a1f88c47f73ef1dbc17e1d3b76b
Additional Information 3: bd85
Additional Information 4: 3ff6cb39815b49b3fa36dfc77420d073

Going to indexing option shows the indexing is not running. 'Modify' and
'Advanced' are greyed out.

How do I correct this problem? More importantly what are the consequence of
not having the indexer running?

Steve

Hi Steve,

Your "Windows Search" Service may be stopped or disabled. Indexing is just a quick search feature. It will not effect how the regular thorough Search feature functions. Take a look at this link for details on starting or enabling the service.

Hope this helps,

Re: Search indexer

Still would not start, it tried to start then failed.
Since it is not a performance issue, and do very little searches I will not
let it worry me.
I will just disable it.

Ok Steve,

I have just one more thing for you to try if you want to. Try deleting the Indexing Folder, it may have gotten corrupted. This should reset it. First, stop and disable the Indexing Service (Windows Search), then:

1. Open Folder Options. (Control Panel or Tools menu in Explorer)
2. Check "Show hidden files and folders" and click OK.
3. Go to: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft" and open the folder.
4. In Microsoft folder, right click the "Search" folder and click Delete.
5. Click Yes for the confirmation prompt.
6. Click Continue for "Access Denied" prompt.
7. Click Continue for UAC prompt.
8. Close Window.

Now enable Indexing to see if it will work right now.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
