| | Important Old Updates From Microsoft For a long time now I have been getting a notice from Microsoft about two important updates they got from Nvidia for my Raid Controller and Serial ATA Controllers. I clicked for more information like the VERSION number, but Microsoft provides nothing. I went to the Nvidia website and it told me I had the latest drivers installed, still Microsoft update complained. Finally I caved in and gave it the okay to install. It installed an old Raid Controller and failed to install the serial ATA controllers. Today Vista wanted to check my raid hard drive and found plenty of errors. :-( Thankfully it managed to fix them. I re-installed the WHQL certified drivers from Nvidia and it looks like everything it back to normal. Microsoft Update even want to install those *&^%$ old drivers again! Many years ago Microsoft changed the operating system so that application software could not install old drivers without plenty of warnings. I guess that feature does not apply to Microsoft applications. Heck, they won't even tell you what version they are installing until it is too late. Al |

| | RE: Important Old Updates From Microsoft Don't download any hardware drivers from Nicrosoft! You can right-click on those updates that are annoying you to hide them. | | Re: Important Old Updates From Microsoft Alfred, I received the update notification and, like you, eventually installed them. Following installation my system wouldn't boot so I used Safe Mode to get in and then delete them; ll has been well since. Historically, I've never trusted Microsoft/windows Update with drivers (it did the same with Netgear drivers on my old laptop) and this just reinforced my view. My recommendation is to note any driver updates and investigate from the relevant manufacturer, then hide the update and, obviously, don't install. | | Re: Important Old Updates From Microsoft Ed; That generally applies to driver updates from Microsoft/Windows Update. Are you suggesting "Never! Ever!" install Service Packs, security updates etc? Those are all software updates. If so I would strongly disagree as it leaves the operating system vulnerable. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Ed Forsythe" <EdForsythe@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:ONtSbbyxHHA.4928@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Never!
